New Brunswick, NJ — The SEIU NJ State Council held its 2025 International Women’s Day celebration at Rutgers University’s School of Management and Labor Relations this Saturday, March 22.  Joined by over 100 members from the affiliates it represents, the Council held a magnificent event commemorating 30 years since the United Nations’ Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action for achieving gender equality.

The day’s theme “Accelerate Action” was the setting to the day’s program, which began with a welcoming message from SEIU NJ State Council President, Megan Chambers, followed by Congresswoman La Monica McIver, CD 10 who spoke about the many contributions of women to society and the world.

Keynote Speaker SEIU International Secretary Treasurer Rocio Saenz called members to action, and to continue the fight for the protection of workers’ rights, racial justice and women’s advancement.

A member’s Round Table discussion “Afternoon Coffee with your Union Friends,” hosted by Dr. Patricia Campos-Medina, included a robust discussion with women, union activists who shared their experiences in labor, struggles and triumphs and their goal to serve as example and inspiration to future generations of labor leaders.  The program closed with remarks from Newark Mayor Ras Baraka who spoke about the current condition of the state and expressed the urgent need of affordable housing, the protection of many immigrant workers that contribute to enrich the State and strengthening worker protections against exploitation.

The SEIU NJ State Council is composed of unions representing service employees across the state, including healthcare, warehouse, industrial laundry and school cafeteria workers.  Our diverse membership also includes motor vehicle inspectors, resident physicians and municipal employees in Newark.  The Council affiliates include 1199 SEIU Healthcare Workers East, Laundry, Distribution and Food Service Joint Board of Workers United; The Committee of Interns and Residents and 32 BJ Motor Vehicle Inspectors.
